A flat playmat and toy arch that converts into a fabric-walled ball pit once baby can sit, extending its useful life well past most gyms on this list.

Bright Starts' 5-in-1 gym starts life as a conventional flat mat with a toy arch carrying seven detachable activity toys and a musical, light-up centrepiece with over 20 minutes of lights and music. The genuine point of difference is that the mat's edges zip or clip up into fabric walls once baby is sitting unsupported, turning the same product into a small ball pit (bundled with a set of plastic balls), which most rivals in this category simply don't attempt.

Against the Fisher-Price gym, it's a similar budget-to-mid price bracket and a similar reliance on lights and music, but the ball-pit conversion gives it a longer window of relevance — useful past the point most flat mats get abandoned. Against the Lovevery Play Gym, it's a fraction of the price but leans on plastic and batteries rather than considered design, which is the trade-off to weigh.

It suits parents who want one purchase to cover both early tummy-time months and the sitting-up, ball-pit-loving phase that follows, and who are comfortable with a more plastic, primary-colours aesthetic than the fabric-led options here. It's a poor fit for anyone wanting a minimalist mat, or worried about the extra clutter and small parts that come with 40 loose balls.

What we liked

  • Converts from flat play gym into a ball pit, extending its useful life
  • Seven detachable toys plus 20+ minutes of lights and music
  • Includes 40 balls, so ball-pit mode is ready straight out of the box

Where it falls short

  • Not machine washable — mat and balls are spot/wipe clean only
  • More plastic parts and loose balls to store than flat-mat rivals
  • Music and lights run on batteries and can't be turned off entirely between plays

How we scored it

Developmental Value

How well the mat/gym supports tummy time, reaching, grasping, tracking and sensory development across the newborn-to-infant stretch, and whether it genuinely grows with the baby rather than being outgrown in weeks.

7/10

Ball-pit conversion gives it a second life stage that most flat gyms don't offer

Build Quality & Washability

Fabric and foam quality, how the mat copes with milk, dribble and inevitable nappy leaks, and whether it's actually machine washable rather than spot-clean-only.

6/10

Wipe-clean only, and the loose balls need their own storage

Value for Money

What you get for the price versus rivals in this list, factoring in how long the mat stays useful before it's outgrown.

8/10
