Hauck
Squeeze Handle Safety Gate
6/10 overall£29.99
A budget pressure-fit gate with a two-handed squeeze-and-lift handle that opens both ways.
Hauck's Squeeze Handle gate is the no-frills, budget option in this category — typically the cheapest gate here, and it doesn't pretend to be anything more than a straightforward pressure-fit barrier. The handle requires squeezing two buttons simultaneously while lifting, which is a genuinely difficult motion for a toddler to replicate but is easy enough for an adult to learn within a day or two of use.
Compared with the auto-close BabyDan Guard Me and Dreambaby Chelsea in this list, the Hauck lacks any self-closing mechanism — you open it, walk through, and have to physically push it shut behind you, which means it's only as safe as the last person's habits. Against the Safety 1st Simply Secure, which is a similarly priced pressure-fit gate, the Hauck's dual-lock squeeze handle is arguably more secure against a toddler because it needs two coordinated hand movements rather than one, but it's also fiddlier for a tired adult at 6am.
At 76cm standard height with an optional extension kit taking it up to 109cm, it fits most standard UK door and stair openings without much trouble, and being pressure-mounted with fixing screws for extra grip, it goes up in minutes without drilling into a rental property's walls. It opens in both directions and swings back to hold at 90°, which is handy if you want it propped open during the day and only closed at bedtime.
The compromise for the low price is build quality that feels a notch below the metal-mesh Safety 1st and Dreambaby gates — the plastic components on the handle mechanism are the most common failure point reported by owners after a couple of years of heavy daily use, so it suits families who want an affordable stopgap for a year or two rather than a gate meant to last through several children.
What we liked
- One of the cheapest gates in this category
- Two-handed squeeze mechanism is hard for toddlers to defeat
- Opens both ways and holds open at 90°
Where it falls short
- No auto-close, relies on the adult shutting it every time
- Plastic handle parts are the most common long-term wear point
- Standard height only 76cm, less climb-resistant than taller gates

How we scored it
Installation Security
How secure the fit is once installed, and whether it needs drilling into walls or banisters.
Ease of Operation
How easy it is for an adult to open one-handed while carrying a baby, without being easy for a toddler to open.
The two-handed squeeze-and-lift is deliberately awkward for toddlers, but that same design makes it noticeably fiddlier for an adult carrying a baby than a single-lever gate.
Fit Flexibility
Range of opening widths it covers, and whether extension packs are available for wide stairwells.
