Bedbug is a light-only sleep aid from Lumie, the Cambridge company better known for SAD lamps and adult wake-up lights — this is their version scaled down for a child's bedroom. It has three functions in one unit: a reading/comfort light, a 15-minute sunset fade that mimics dusk colours to signal bedtime, and a dim, low-blue night light setting for overnight feeds or nappy changes that's designed not to fully wake a sleeping child.

The low-blue-light angle is the main technical differentiator versus a generic plug-in night light — most cheap night lights use white or blue-tinted LEDs, which is exactly the wavelength known to suppress melatonin and can make it harder for a child (or parent) to drop back off after a night waking. Bedbug's amber-toned output is deliberately gentler for that middle-of-the-night use case, though it's worth being clear this is a lighting aid, not a sound machine — it does nothing for noise, so it complements rather than replaces something like a Groegg2 or a white noise soother.

It's mains powered via an adaptor, which is worth flagging: Lumie issued a safety notice for the original Blue Iron adaptor supplied with units sold in 2017-2018, since replaced under warranty, so a current purchase comes with the corrected adaptor. There's no app, no Bluetooth speaker, no sunrise wake-up feature — it's a simpler, single-purpose product than Lumie's adult Bodyclock range, and priced accordingly lower.

Best for parents who want a calmer bedtime routine cue and a genuinely dim overnight light rather than a full sound-and-light sleep trainer — it won't teach a toddler to stay in bed the way a Groclock does, and at around £60 it's a premium price for what is, functionally, a well-designed dimmable lamp.

What we liked

  • Low-blue night light setting genuinely dimmer than typical plug-in lights
  • Gradual 15-minute sunset gives a consistent bedtime cue
  • Simple, no app or account needed

Where it falls short

  • Expensive for a light-only device with no sound function
  • Mains powered, not portable for travel
  • Doesn't include any sunrise wake-up feature unlike Lumie's adult lamps

How we scored it

Sound Quality

How consistent and non-looping the white noise sounds over a full night.

1/10

Purely a lighting product — no sound function, so it cannot be scored meaningfully against sound quality beyond the floor value.

Ease of Use

How simple it is to set timers, volume and routines without a manual.

8/10

Value for Money

Features and battery life relative to price.

5/10

Around £60 for a light-only device is steep next to combined sound-and-light options like Hatch Rest at a similar price point.
