MAM already has an Original soother in this category; the Start Night is a different, newborn-specific product rather than just another colourway. The teat and shield are made smaller than MAM's standard 0-6 month Original line, which matters for the first few weeks when even a "0-6 months" dummy can look oversized against a newborn's face — this is sized for exactly that window before a baby moves on to a standard-size soother.

Like the Original, it uses MAM's SkinSoft silicone teat and self-sterilising travel case, so the acceptance and hygiene story is broadly the same 94%-acceptance pitch MAM applies across its range. What's different is scale, not material or design philosophy, so if a baby has already rejected other MAM soothers, this smaller size is unlikely to change that on its own.

Because it's sized for 0-2 months specifically, it has the shortest usable window of anything in this category — most babies will size up within a matter of weeks, which makes the £9.50 pack of two a short-term buy rather than something that lasts through infancy the way the Tommee Tippee Night Time or Philips Avent Ultra Air ranges (both spanning several age bands) can.

Best suited to parents who specifically want a newborn-scaled soother for the first few weeks rather than starting straight on a standard 0-6 month size, and who don't mind buying again once their baby moves up a size.

What we liked

  • Sized specifically for newborns rather than a generic 0-6 month fit
  • Same SkinSoft silicone and self-sterilising case as MAM's wider range
  • Reasonably priced for a two-pack

Where it falls short

  • Shortest usable age window of any soother in this category
  • Same brand/material as the existing MAM Original, so no help if a baby has already rejected MAM's teat shape
  • Needs replacing with a standard size within weeks

How we scored it

Baby Acceptance

How readily babies typically take to the teat shape and stay settled with it in, based on shape, weight and how it sits against the face.

7/10

A newborn-scaled shield can suit very small babies better than a standard 0-6 month soother, though it follows the same MAM teat shape as the Original, which some babies reject outright.

Durability

How well the dummy holds up to repeated sterilising, biting and daily wear over the months a baby uses one size.

5/10

Outgrown within weeks by design, so durability is limited more by sizing than material wear.

Value for Money

Cost per dummy set against pack size, features (case, glow-in-the-dark, ventilation) and how often families end up replacing them.

5/10

Weighted by importance for this category — see our editorial policy for how we test.
